Roadtripping-Zion National Park, Utah

So needless to say our trip did not start out as planned.  We hadn't even left McAlester yet and one kid was already getting sick, rain was moving in and we didn't buy the correct cargo carrier. When we finally made it to Zion National Park the next day we were immediately happy with our summer destination. To enter the park you pay $30.00 for your private vehicle and that gets you into the park for 7 days. When you walk through the park you will just need to show your vehicle pass and that is good for everyone that is in your vehicle. There are other rates that you can check out on the website above.  What made this vacation so easy is their shuttle service.

The shuttle service was awesome! We have three small children and this definitely made seeing every site easy. They say the shuttle comes every 30 minutes but we never waited that long and we were there a week. There are stops in front of several local hotels in Springdale, Utah and there are other stops throughout the city (which is very small by the way).  The shuttle will take you to the visitor center. From there you must get off and and actually enter the park. This is where you show your vehicle pass or purchase the pass. You can also rent hiking boots, bikes, and walking sticks (a must for The Narrows). There is another shuttle after you enter the park that you can get on to take you to the other locations such as The Narrows, Angel's Landing, Zion Lodge, and various other sites.

There are several different hikes you can do from easy to extreme. We did an easy hike where you can see waterfalls and some of us even braved Angel's Landing. The lodge that is located within the park is a great place to relax after a hike. We packed our lunch and had it out on the big grass area. You can also purchase lunch instead. They have an ice cream shop and gift shop as well.

The Narrows

This hike is A MUST!

From the Zion National Park website:

"The Narrows is the narrowest section of Zion Canyon. This gorge, with walls a thousand feet tall and the river sometimes just twenty to thirty feet wide, is one of the most popular areas in Zion National Park. You can see The Narrows by hiking along the paved, wheelchair accessible Riverside Walk for one mile from the Temple of Sinawava. If you wish to see more, you will be walking in the Virgin River. This can involve wading upstream for just a few minutes or it can be an all day hike."

We went in June and the water level was low enough that we were able to take our kids through a lot of it. Our youngest is two so we had to carry him a significant amount of time and at some points we had to pick up our five year old up because the water was a little high for what we were comfortable with. But this hike can definitely be done with small children. The great thing about it is that you can go as far as you are comfortable with. The mile hike to the entrance is worth it even if you decide not to hike up the Narrows. There is a big opening where kids can play, great views, and shade in case you are going on a warm day. The canyon does get flash flooding so be aware of the advisories for that day.

Purchase your selfie stick before you go! Yes I said it, I am a proud owner of a selfie stick and I don't regret it!

All in all in I would say add Zion National Park to the bucket list. It's beautiful. The Grand Canyon and Las Vegas are within driving distance as well if you plan your vacation ahead of time.
